DOs:

Use normal amounts of cleaning detergents in drains and toilets.

Conserve water by replacing old fixtures with “low flow” types, and fixing any leaks or drips.

Direct outside spouts to run away from septic field.

Practice hiring licensed professionals to pump your septic tank out every two to five years.

Keep the cover of your septic tank free and clear for easy inspections.

Ensure that any air vents are not blocked.

DON'Ts:

Overload your system. Practice running major appliances at different times during the day, and avoid doing all of your laundry at once.

Dump solids into the sink. Coffee grounds and improperly disposed of food waste decreases the septic tank’s capacity.

Pour fat or oils down the drain. Both can back up and clog the system.

Use the toilet or any sinks as a garbage disposal.

Add any commercial products or yeast to the system.

Plant trees directly over septic bed. Large roots can clog or break pipes.

Drive or park any vehicles directly over septic bed.

Cover the septic bed with any hard substance such as asphalt or concrete.

Enter or inspect the tank for any reason – dangerous gases are produced by the natural treatment process and can be fatal.
